Disposing of prunings

I just read an article where the pruned clippings are left in the aisle and gone over with a flail mower at slow speeds. the mower completely grinds up most of the canes--by early summer nothing is left. This would eliminate the need for burning the canes. It would be an organic way of helping the soil. Do you find this valuable?
